HSC Results 2024: Changes in Exam and Results Process
The results for the HSC and equivalent exams have been released, with an overall pass rate of 77.78% across the 9 general education boards, madrasa, and technical education boards. Specifically, for the 9 general education boards, the pass rate for HSC students stands at 75.56%. The published results reveal that, on average, the pass rate across all 11 boards is 77.78%. Additionally, a total of 145,911 students have achieved a GPA of 5.
This year’s Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) and equivalent examinations saw significant disruptions, with some exams held and others canceled due to socio-political upheaval in Bangladesh. The results for the canceled exams have been prepared using a subject-mapping system based on Secondary School Certificate (SSC) and equivalent exam scores. The results published today, Tuesday, October 15, at 11:00 AM, across all education boards.
A New Approach to Releasing HSC Results
Traditionally, the chairpersons of the various education boards would present a summary of the results to the Prime Minister at her office, followed by a formal announcement. The Education Minister would then hold a press conference to share detailed results with the media. This process had become the standard over the years.
However, this year, the education boards are adopting a new approach. There will be no official ceremony or gathering involving government officials or the Ministry of Education. Instead, the chairpersons of the respective education boards will independently announce the results of their boards, breaking away from the previous tradition.
How Students Can Get Their Results
The Board of Intermediate and Secondary Education has issued clear instructions on how students can access their HSC results. According to their notice, students can download the results for their respective institutions by visiting the official websites, such as www.educationboardresults.gov.bd, and www.eduboardresults.gov.bd . By entering the institution’s EIIN (Educational Institute Identification Number), institutions can download the result sheets for all students. Additionally, students can check their individual results from website by giving roll and registration number.
Alternatively, students can receive their results via SMS. To do so, they need to send a text message to 16222, following this format: HSC<space>Board name (first 3 letters)<space>Roll<space>Year. For example, typing HSC DHA 123456 2024 and sending it to 16222 will return the result via text message.
The Subject Mapping System
The results for the canceled HSC exams are based on a subject-mapping system that uses the students’ SSC exam scores. The Inter-Board Coordination Committee decided to apply this method, ensuring that the results are fair and based on previous academic performance. According to Tapan Kumar Sarkar, the chairman of the Inter-Education Board Coordination Committee, the results of the exams that were held have been evaluated using the traditional method. For subjects where exams were canceled, the results have been generated based on the SSC scores, mapped to corresponding subjects in the HSC.
A specific guideline has been followed for this mapping process. If a student achieved a certain score in a particular subject in their SSC exams and that subject was also part of the HSC curriculum, the same score will be applied to the corresponding HSC subject. In cases where the subjects differ between the SSC and HSC exams, the results will be calculated using the established mapping criteria.
Why the Exams Were Canceled
The cancellation of several HSC exams followed a series of political protests and unrest. The HSC exams began on June 30, 2024, with around 1.45 million students sitting for the exams. However, after seven subjects were completed, a movement calling for reforms to the government’s employment quota system escalated. This led to multiple delays, and by the time six subjects remained, the situation worsened.
On August 5, 2024, widespread protests resulted in the collapse of the Sheikh Hasina government. Following this event, the education authorities attempted to reschedule the exams, initially planning to hold them from August 11. However, due to continued unrest and damage to exam materials in various police stations, the exams were postponed again, with new dates set for September 11.
Nevertheless, student protests intensified, with many demanding that the remaining exams be canceled due to the mental strain caused by the ongoing uncertainty. Eventually, the authorities yielded to the pressure, and the remaining HSC exams were canceled.
The HSC results for 2024 mark a significant departure from the traditional process, both in how the results were prepared and how they will be announced. Despite the disruptions, the education boards have worked to ensure that students’ performances are fairly assessed through the subject mapping system. As students and educators alike adjust to these changes, this year’s results reflect the broader challenges the country has faced in maintaining academic continuity amid political and social upheaval.
